PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Bermuda scored twice in the first half and defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 in the opening Group B match of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Under 17 Tournament at the Sylvio Cator Stadium.
Eva Frazzoni opened the scoring in the 20th minute by hammering in a rebound off a shot from Aaliyah Nolan that Dominican goalkeeper Yelandy Vasquez initially saved.
Four minutes later, Zahra Gibbons made it 2-0, when she completed a brilliant solo run down right wing by evading multiple defenders to slot past Vasquez.
The Dominicans halved the deficit in the 59th minute with forward Ana Taveras netting from close range thanks to a Dayanara Martinez’s picture-perfect cross.
Bermuda grabbed an insurance goal through Deshae Darrell in the 90th minute.
Group B returns to action on Monday with a doubleheader. The Dominican Republic will take on Grenada, followed by a meeting between Bermuda and Trinidad & Tobago.
