VIENNA, Austria -- The United States fell 1-0 to host Austria in an international friendly on Tuesday at Ernst-Happel-Stadion.

Marc Janko tallied the lone goal of the match in the 33rd minute for the Austrians, who failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup.

The Americans went winless in their final two games of the year after playing Scotland to a scoreless draw in Glasgow on Friday.  Despite those results, 2013 proved to be their most successful season ever.

They qualified for a seventh successive World Cup, captured a fifth CONCACAF Gold Cup title and finished with a 16-3-4 record.  The win total set a new team mark for the most in a single calendar year.

The U.S. claimed it should have had a goal and a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute.

Aron Johannsson smacked a shot from outside the penalty area that goalkeeper Robert Almer knocked out of bounds.

On the ensuing corner kick by Michael Bradley, a six-yard header by Geoff Cameron appeared to have gone over the goal line.  The Americans also felt an Austrian defender handled the ball on the play, but the referee and his assistant ruled otherwise.

The home side broke the ice in the 33rd minute.  A nice through ball found Gyorgy Garics on the right flank and he delivered a cross into the area that Marc Janko flicked past goalkeeper Tim Howard from seven yards into the high near post.

Ten minutes later, Bradley had a close-range effort blocked by an Austrian defender.

U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann tried to inject some fresh legs into the lineup in the 56th minute as he replaced midfielder Brek Shea and Johnannsson with Mix Diskerud and Eddie Johnson, respectively.

Terrence Boyd, who came on for Jermaine Jones in the 67th minute, powered an 18-yard blast over the crossbar.  In the 74th minute, striker Jozy Altidore could not connect fully with the ball and his attempt from 10-yards out went right to Almer.

The visitors had one last gasp in the 90th minute only to see Altidore boot a 22-yard free kick wide left.

Only seconds prior to the final whistle in the third minute of stoppage time, Howard stopped an onrushing Andreas Ivanschitz on the left side of the box.
