Antigua & Barbuda to host CONCACAF coaching course

A CONCACAF "D" License coaching course, like the one pictured above,  will be held in Antigua and Barbuda, May 8-11, 2014.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua and Barbuda -- Entry level coaches in Antigua and Barbuda will have an opportunity to lay a solid foundation for the future, when the country hosts a CONCACAF “D” license next month.

CONCACAF Development Officer Lenny Lake of St. Kitts & Nevis and instructor Joe Supe, who coached the Cayman Islands at the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship earlier this year, will conduct the course.

A wide range of topics will be addressed, including: coaching principles, training by age, fundamentals of planning training sessions, physical training, health and security, as well as among other aspects related to youth football.

The CONCACAF initiative is welcomed by Everton Gonsalves, President of the Antigua & Barbuda Football Association (ABFA).

“The educating of our coaches is always top priority for us and we are so happy that President Jeff Webb and our colleagues at CONCACAF have decided to put out this course,” expressed Gonsalves.  “We are looking forward for full registration so that we can continue the good job of further developing football in Antigua & Barbuda.”

Gonsalves, a former captain of the Antigua & Barbuda national team, believes that the continued availability of similar courses is the key to improving the game in the Caribbean.

“As the jingle says, education is the key to life (and) if you want to continuously develop, if you want to make headway and if you want to stand in a strong position you cannot afford not to have a sound education,” he stressed.  “I know President Webb and CONCACAF have been doing an excellent job in terms of looking at the yearly calendar and making sure that education is felt and not only seen in those areas.

“The AFBA has advocated education for such a long time now that it is a very important and salient feature of our administration and we are more than happy to always provide education, not only to coaches but to administrators.”

The course will take place May 8-11 at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St. John’s.
